New rules on privacy in electronic communication

There are constantly new opportunities and risks when communicating online. So the rules safeguarding peoples' privacy need to be updated every now and then. Like now.

How did we get here?

This is about cookies! Unfortunately not the ones you can eat, but the ones that track you online. And it is generally about the protection of privacy and confidentiality of us who communicate electronically (= which is basically almost everyone!). These rules have to get an update. Perhaps you remember the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the big EU project on the protection of personal data that was agreed on last year. New, updated rules on e-privacy are supposed to complement the GDPR and are the last piece in a new EU data protection framework.

Why is this important for me?

Because the super annoying cookie banners might go away! (Btw, what are cookies and how are they used?) And because you don't necessarily want others to know the details of your online communication.

What's the content?

The proposal which was presented by three (!!) EU Commissioners (AnsipJourova and Timmermans) contains several novelties:

What's happening with this legislation in the future?

This file will be dealt with in the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee and in the Council among ministers of justice. In October 2017 the Parliament adopted its negotiation position, while the Council is still in discussion mode. The Commission wants the Council and the European Parliament to hurry and adopt the new rules by May 2018, when the General Data Protection Regulation will enter into force.
