Most of the time nothing goes wrong. It works just fine. But can you be sure that it stays like that? That you are fit for the future, the next ten to fifteen years? In this case you need a check up. And an update. That is what the Commission is planning to do for the European aviation sector as part of the EU Aviation Strategy: ensure that air transport for passengers stays at least as safe, secure and environmentally friendly as it is. And also there is: drones!
Because you don't want a drone crashing into the plane you're on. You are currently enjoying nice passenger rights, a lot of safety and competition (=meaning choice + rather low fares!) when travelling by plane in the EU. And yes, ashtrays on planes contribute to that safety! While the number of flights will go up by 50% until 2035, the number of accidents shall stay as low as they are.
Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc's proposal contains several points of action. The most important ones are:
The proposal is currently discussed in the Parliament's Transport Committee and among European transport ministers and their lower level aides. The Parliament agreed on a position in November 2016, the Council's agreement followed shortly after. Negotiations between them were wrapped up with a deal in November 2017. Once the agreed text has been finalised by the lawyers, it must be formally approved by Parliament and Council. The procedure is expected to be completed in spring 2018. Following adoption, the regulation will be published in the EU's Official Journal. It will enter into force twenty days after publication.
